An artist's favourite places around the world

Dawn is a visual artist who works across a range of different mediums, including: collage, photography, sculpturing, drawing and light installations.

What kind of traveler are you?

Curious. I am the most curious person I know and that definitely governs the way I travel.

What is your favourite destination to date and why?

New York City. Living there in my 20s makes it a second home of sorts. The velocity, energy and ideas in that city give me a perennial rush.

Can you tell us where to eat, drink, shop, party there?

Eat - Prune serves flavourful European style cuisine.

Drink - The Nomad library bar has a cozy ambiance for you to have drinks at.

Shop - Brooklyn has a bunch of good flea markets on the weekends but for something on the other end of the spectrum, the Celine flagships both uptown and downtown are a must if only to take in the materiality, design and use of stone in the space.

Party - A good night of dancing at Output brooklyn.

You draw inspiration from normal, unexpected things around you. What are some places around the world that you love exploring?

I just did a road trip through Croatia ending up in Montenegro after my art show in Paris. That was fantastic! New Zealand, Arizona and Tokyo are all close seconds.

What are some of your favourite flea markets of all time?

St Ouen just outside the city of Paris is an ocean of antiques and oddities. Many movie set and prop designers source there in bulk.

You've scoured a lot of Singapore and her heartlands as part of your work. Can you share some interesting neighbourhoods you've stumbled upon that are worth a visit?

Tanglin mall is fantastic for its mom & pop store authenticity and small aquarium shops.

You've lived in many places before moving back to Singapore. What was your favourite thing to do in each place that was special and unique to the place?

London - Columbia flower market on any given Sunday.

Paris - Sennelier art store along the seine. They are a three generation art supplier and stock the best inks and hair brushes.

Manhattan to Brooklyn and back - Lapping the bridges on a bike.

As an artist, what are your favourite museums and galleries around the world?

The Dia beacon foundation in New York hands down. A close second is the Louisiana museum in Denmark.

What are some of your must do's when you travel?

Waking up early to go for a solo run.

What are your 5 travel essentials?

  • My iPhone
  • Writing material
  • Reading material
  • Water
  • My husband

If there was one artist's vacation home you would like to live in for a week, whose would it be?

Yves saint Laurent's home in Marrakech just for its garden. I'd set up a tent there. I think it's called the Jardin Majorelle.
