Page and Erica of Go! Girl Guides brought us a pretty rad Blog-O-Rama takeover this week! We’ve really enjoyed learning more about Argentina through the perspective of these fine ladies. The flight to Argentina is a long one—10 hours of elbow-knockin’ and cramped sleeping—and it’s such a nice relief knowing you have a fully-furnished, air-conditioned, private apartment waiting for you upon landing.

After a 20-minute drive from the airport, we arrived at our charming Roomorama apartment in Palermo Hollywood, Buenos Aires. Guidebook writing is no easy feat, and we were really excited to set down our bags, check out our digs, and get to work.

Nestled in a mature neighborhood with tree-lined streets and an eclectic mix of classic Spanish and minimalist modern buildings, the location was easy to find and boasted a clean, accessible exterior.

The concierge (Paula) greeted us warmly and ushered us to her office where she patiently described the area, pointing out key locations she thought we’d enjoy, sending us off with some of the best maps of Buenos Aires we’d ever seen (which came in handy the first, second and third time we got lost in the city).

She briefed us quickly on the safety of each area, how to get there (taxi vs. subway vs. bus) and notified us of a market just down the street where we could buy groceries.

The apartment was the perfect space for the two of us to share; the layout open and well lit, with modern furnishings and a sizable balcony that looked onto the bustling street. The kitchen was fully stocked with all of the tools necessary to cook, dine, and clean. Having complimentary wireless upon arrival allowed us to stay connected to our friends and family and scout out our next adventure.

The in-room safe and 24-hour staff gave us the comfort of knowing our valuables were secure when we were away. We wouldn’t have asked for more pleasant accommodations and beautiful surroundings to start our trip off in Argentina.

From our initial contact with Roomorama on the web, they have maintained a user-friendly and professional approach, and their accommodations and staff on the ground followed suit. Our first stay with Roomorama sold us on including this network of upscale apartments in our search for places to stay in future travels.

Buenos Aires is a big, beautiful city that has completely sucked us in.

We’ve gotten lost once or twice since our arrival (okay, maybe like four or five times), but we’re starting to figure out the ins and outs of this metropolitan city while working on our latest guidebook for women, Go! Girl Guides: Argentina; A Woman’s Guide to Traveling in Argentina from our chic Roomorama apartment.

Traveling to Buenos Aires soon? Awesome! Here are some things to keep in mind:

1) US Citizens have to pay a $140 visa that allows entry into the country for 10 years. If you intend to pay cash for said visa, best plan on brining brand new bills, as bills with even a slight ink smudge will not be accepted.

2) Upon a recommendation, we stuck to catching only Radio Taxis as we know they are registered and regulated. Both of our experiences with this company so far have proven successful.

3) The exchange rate offered in the airport is significantly worse than what large banks and exchange centers offer (at the time of this post, the airport offered $3.7AR to $1USD while the large exchange centers downtown offer $4.4.AR). Our situation landed us somewhere in the middle: we changed a small amount at the airport, and then because we were running a bit late (banks here close between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm) a cabbie took us to a mall to change our bills.  We got a 4.25 exchange rate at Metropila inside the mall. Additional side note: we left the cabbie outside and told him we would return with pesos. There were lines, so we took a while. He hunted us down inside and charged us $10AR for the inconvenience. Fair enough.

4) When bus drivers say ‘solo centavos’ they mean they only accept coins. And they’re not joking. We got booted from one bus when we proved to be coinless. Lesson: bring coins.

5) The men (and women) are beautiful. Period. All of them – so there are lots of flirting opportunities. Live-it-up. But, don’t take it farther than you are comfortable, and always maintain boundaries and stay safe.

6) Our rusty Spanish has proven invaluable –we’re brushing up quickly, and both feel that if we didn’t at least have some basic Spanish in our tool belt, we would be eff’d.

7) Overall, we felt incredibly safe—in some regards, probably too much so. In a journey that took us from our apartment in Palermo Hollywood to El Centro, we travelled by taxi, bus and foot and were increasingly less and less worried about our bags or general safety. The biggest threat we encountered was the lack of respect for pedestrians by quickly moving automobiles. Don’t hedge your bets on pedestrian rights; follow locals and stick to smaller crossings where possible.

Page and Erica looking beautiful as ever in Argentina.

Go! Girl Guides (GGG) is taking over our blog this week and we couldn’t be more pumped! As a woman, I know how difficult it can be to map out the perfect solo vacation as there are a number of factors to be considered before embarking on a journey to foreign lands. Factors that GGG address in their kick-ass travel guidebooks, made for women by women. What can you find in their guidebooks? GGG explains:

Our country-by-country guidebooks not only give women the inside scoop on the best places to eat or drink while on the road, they also give them valuable information by finding the safest and most affordable places to stay, highlighting tours that cater to women, finding spiritual retreats and centers of rejuvenation, and exploring free or low-cost volunteer options that are safe and leave a lasting impression.

Having completed their very first guidebook on Thailand, they are now working on their second book on Argentina with the help of  Go!
